Certificate of Family Medicine

CERTIFICATION OF THE COLLEGE OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS OF CANADA (CCFP)

This is certification awarded by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and is needed to obtain a full licence to practice in BC, from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

Important Notes:

  • Physicians who have only completed Canadian residency can only obtain this certification by passing the Certification Exam in Family Medicine – they are not eligible to apply for certification without examination.
  • There is a written exam of clinical problem solving over 6 hours on one day and simulated office oral scenarios which are 15 minutes each on another day.
  • Exam preparation information can be found here.
  • If you were not successful in passing the certification examinations of the CFPC of Canada you will need to proceed with the following steps:
    • Apply for College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC registration.
    • Receive a ruling from CPSBC Registration Committee in order to receive your Provisional License.
    • Once you have your provisional license you can make another attempt to obtain your CCFP.
